Old Growth Forests

What impact will this story have on Canada's future?
What conflicting interests are presented?

Value found in old-growth forestsSEAN PATRICK SULLIVANThe Canadian PressSeptember 4, 2008 at 1:51 PM EDTVANCOUVER — Leaving British Columbia's old-growth forests standing may make more economic sense than cutting them down for timber, especially as the province looks to strategies to cut global warming, a new B.C. study suggests. The report from Simon Fraser University challenges the status quo and uses Ministry of Forest data to show that conservation wins out over logging when forests are valued for their role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, protecting endangered species and providing opportunities for recreation. The study backed by three environmental groups – Wilderness Committee, David Suzuki Foundation, and Ecojustice – used computer modelling to look at a variety of conservation and logging scenarios in a large tract of forest near Vancouver. In almost every scenario, the researchers said, they found that the value of the carbon captured and stored by the trees far outweighed the value of the lumber harvested from the logs.Internet LinksB.C. forest information map Faisal Moola, science director for the David Suzuki Foundation, called the results a clear indicator that B.C. should be protecting its old-growth forest as it works with other western provinces to reduce global warming.“The old-growth forests that we have are not only going to be a benefit in the fight against climate change, but there's also a significant economic windfall that could be celebrated by British Columbians,” he said.

I like the idea that they're trying to cut global warming but i seriously don't think that this will work. Not cutting down trees is very good but i think scientist should find out which trees give out the most oxygen and take in the most carbon dioxide. That way, we can still cut down trees to use and we can still have oxygen because we can chop down the trees that give less oxygen to the world and preserve the trees that give more oxygen.

We all think that global worming needs to stop but the way we are headed it wont and as scientist's believe half of the world will be under sea level by 2012

I truly agree with this article. I think that old-growth forest should not be cut down for paper or/and lumber. It is true that forests have a very important role of capturing carbon dioxide and producing more oxygen. It is very true that we are damaging the evironment by cutting down forests for some of our daily needs.

I also think it is confusing and I agree that somthing needs to be done. If nothing is done about it now we will have to live with it later

I think that this article is interesting. This will make a big difference in Canada because the trees in the world are what makes the world fresh. Trees pretty much give us life. YThey give us fresh oxygen in exchange of something that we do not need, Carbon Dioxide so I do not really find a reason to cut down good trees.

hi i think that trees are a good tool in life and i think we need them a lot trees make paper and i think we need to cut some of them down. jeff

This is quite intriguing. The value of the tree's conservation is larger than the value of logging. I agree with Conrad on the fact that you can maximize the potential profit by using the trees that best serve for this purpose and still log the trees that are less useful.

Great blog, I thought it is easy to understand.

I believe global warning needs to stop because we want our country to be a safe and unplud our country.
When we cut down these trees for a wrong reason I belive it is wrong. It is wrong because we are hurting the enviorment for the wrong reason. If we keep these trees alive then we a helping global warning.

I really think that the arcitcle is right on saying to keep the forest. I agree with this because global warming is coming in fast and if we fight with it the world may end sooner than expected.

I really think we should stop cutting down trees but we should make trees that give more oxegen so we can cut trees that produce much oxegen.

trees are friends not paper. well they are paper but they shouldn't be!!

It is very important to reduce the cut of trees because they give us oxygen, and they give us many other things that we do not percieve , and we also have to fight against global warming.

The fight against climate change is one important to human life but Christopher Lakkotypis has previously stated that trees a freinds not paper. I would like to ask Christopher a question would he rather have the last page of paper needed for an ssignment or would he rather have another tree to look at. If he truly backs his statement he would go wtih the first if not the latter.

i think the only way to help global warming is to plant more trees.

I absolutely agree with this article, since this article is making lots of sense. We should stop global warming, but those people just can't stop logging lumbers. We can just hope that those people can stop logging those old growth trees.

After reading the article over a second time I realized that it was about old growth trees not just trees in general this affects my first statement greatly as this means that all old growth forest need to saved and a current forests preserved so they can eventually become old growth forest. We can also produce logging in a way which is efficient, affordable and green. through this method:I propose a career which does nothing but grow and manage trees to help us replant forest which have been logged. We should use trees that don't take relatively long to grow.If this career plan is funded by the government we can produce lumber at a rate in which Canada's profit is increased and forests are being recreated in twenty years. Forests will remained unharmed if they are old growth and few will be set aside for the purpose of eventually becoming old growth forest. This will be good for us in all areas. Helping us with our economic and environmental issues.
