Daily Bread hopes donations increase in fall drive's final week

Toronto's Daily Bread Food Bank is short hundreds of thousands of pounds and dollars in its annual fall drive to fill the shelves of food banks across the GTA.
"It's extremely slow right now," said Gail Nyberg, the food bank's executive director. "We just did a count last night. We're at 110,000 pounds of food – or about 50,000 kilograms – and $98,000 in donations."
That's about 15 per cent down from the same time last year, Nyberg said. The shelves at the Daily Bread Food Bank are looking a little sparse, but Nyberg hopes the next seven days will turn things around. "This is our big week. Between today and next Monday are the biggest times of the year for us in terms of bringing in food and money. But we have a long way to go."
The food bank wants to raise 500,000 pounds of food and $500,000 in cash donations this fall. Many of its clients are what Nyberg describes as the working poor. Twenty-eight per cent of food bank users are in families where at least one person is working.
With the uncertain economic times, Nyberg is forecasting that this winter the number of working poor using the food bank will increase dramatically given the increased cost of daily expenses such as food, gas and home heating.
The shrinking job market will also play a critical role, she said. Many residents of the GTA who made $25 an hour in manufacturing jobs are now out of work and have turned to the service sector for employment. But jobs in that sector pay substantially lower at about $10 to $12 an hour. Those are the people whom Nyberg believes will increasingly turn to food banks this winter.
According to the Daily Bread's research, across the GTA there were 952,000 visits to food banks for food last year.
The fall food drive kicked off on Sept. 27 and runs until Oct. 17. Financial donations can be made online at dailybread.ca or by calling 416-203-0050. Food donations can be dropped off at any fire hall, Loblaws or Real Canadian Superstore.

I chose this news article because shortages in the food banks would mean less food for poor people
This article shows that if we all don't try to take action and make a difference no one will take action and make a difference. If we do not take collective action the growing number of working poor will not be able to turn to food banks for food. This means they will stop spending money on anything but food. If this occurs consumers are lost.Less consumers=less money. When a company loses money people lose jobs. This causes a continuous windfall into an eventual depression in which more cuts are made in the manufacturing business and even more people can be classified as working poor. This downward spiral will and can occur if we do not take action.
i think keep it open and hope thay get more and more every year
I think that they should get more people to donate because a lot of people depend on food banks for survival and if the food banks run out of food, where will they go?
Francois I think you consern for the less fortunate and the food banks is nice. great article
I truly agree with Chris. If we don't take action now, it might me too late. It is also true that prices are going higher, and it is harder for people to donate to foodbanks. I believe that even if there are high prices, we should still donate, because many people are in need.
This news articicle is trying to tell people to take action of what is going on in the food banks. This would also make many people lose jobs
I think that this article is very inportant becuase there are people out in the world with out food barely live. We have it easy, all we have to do is go home and ask mom or dad whats for dinner. When some people out in the world have to stay without food for days and have to go begging for change. I think that a food bank is a really good idea becuase it gives some people food as small as "Mac & Cheese" and they might consider that a feast.
I believe that more people should donate more because more people depend on food banks.I understand that it is hard to donate because the prices keep on getting higher.
I agree with all the people in here because many people in all Canada deoend on the food bank, and if it goes down then, what are they going to do?
I really think that if we dont act fast and do something now Canada will go in crisist and people will panic and will stop beliving in the goverment
sorry for deoend the word is depend
Thanks for the article, now I know what food banks do.
i agree with everyone who has sent a comment that i have read and i truly believe that i will try to give some food to the food bank and i think we all should give some food
that article was very....ok
food banks are very good my mom and i go to food banks to give stuff.hahahahah
I think that this is a great idea and they deffinitly should continue this food bank. It will be a great thing for the community. I have a good feeling about this foor bank!!!
i think that the food bank can't get any money or food because the banks in the usa lost money because people could not pay the bank for their morgages then the bank takes away their home and that makes more homeless people and then the banks cant sell the homes to other people so then the banks have all of these homes but cant sell them to anybody then the bank loses money then people in Canada don't get that much business and people losing their jobs in the car building plant so then people can't buy things from other people because they lost their jobs the the busines's dont get any money then they cant donate as much food because they dont want to lose any mony because every one dosent want to lose mony then they dont get business from other people
that is why I think no one is donating.
there are a lot of poor people need food so if the food bank go down, the poor people will have nothing to do.
