Starbucks has built its name around being environmentally sound and culturally sensitive.
But a British tabloid newspaper has labelled the coffee empire "the great drain robber'' for wasting one of the earth's most precious resources - water.
The Sun claims that world-wide, the coffee giant is wasting 23 million litres of clean water a day.
That's enough to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool every 83 minutes.
Such wasteful ways have created an Internet backlash all over the globe.
That's because every time a Starbucks barista makes a latte, a dirty spoon is put into a dipping well, which is attached to a tap that runs constantly.
"It's just nobody's thinking about it,'' said a Vancouver woman, who spoke to CTV. "You are just waiting for your drink, you're watching the water going down."
CTV News went to a local Starbucks outlet on Vancouver's Robson Street and found that the tap is always on, except overnight.
In a written statement, the company admitted it's an issue that needs immediate attention.
Starbucks says it keeps the water running for health reasons because it's the best way of keeping spoons clean.
But environmentalists like Eric Lorenz of the Sierra Club say that's ridiculous.
"Is this an essential service? is it a hospital?" Lorenz said. " And hey, have [they] no other method for cleaning their utensils? And I have to say I don't think it is,'' he said. "It's for your four dollar latte.''
Starbucks is trying to find an alternative. While it does so, it need only look across the street where CTV found a local mom and pop shop where Nick Allan makes lattes by pouring steamed milk right from the jug. He doesn't use a spoon.
Meanwhile environmentalists want the big kid on the block -- in this case Starbucks -- to lead by example and make headlines about how it conserves water.

WOW thats alot of water being used i dont know if i will go back again
starbucks needs to find an alternative to stop wasting the precious water resources. the people who found them doing this is important because this could have continued for years.
I can not believe that a big company like starbucks got hit because they are wasting water
holy....i feel sorry for all the water wasted. I dont think that I'll go back to starbucks again cuz they r wasters. :( I think they should stop using water for spoons and just wash them on the spot. :)
By wasting that much water they are draining the amount we have left and i guaranty that we will need that water later on. As the world get's older our water source get smaller and starbuck's is not helping it.
I think that Starbucks is just giving people what they want and that takes a lot of water. But I do not think that they will need to waste so much water. It can be a really big problem, if it is shut down, people will be sad, it is a great place to settle down!
I have a message for Starbucks. The message is"Clean up your act, take action against wasteful ways and take responsibility for what you have done".The fight against climate change is one I believe starts with the large businesses and politicians. Starbucks co-operation is critical to the survival of the world as we know it. It isn't like it is hard for them to stop this waste. Tell them to start putting their heads together to make our environment a safer place.
I think they should stop wasting water becuase water is very important for our earth.
I go to Starbuck about 3 times a week. I never knew that Starbucks leaves their water on for the whole day! I believe that it is the most unreasonable way to waste clean, fresh water. The water that is being wasted at Starbucks could be used to save lives in poor coutries. Many people around the globe need clean water to survive. The problem is that they can't have it because there is too much water being wasted all over the world including Starbucks.
thets a lot of wasted water. you see the water bottles that say help get water for people in need.
Starbucks should stop using fresh water. They should have no excuse for this mistake they made. They should pore water from the jug instead of a spoon because a spoon will be washing always and that means the water will be wasting.

wow...o...wow that is relly bad wasting all that water we should stop the coffe untillllllllllll the end.
this is completely insane Starbucks has to stop using that much water. maybe they could buy a bunch of spoons and a dishwasher instead of one spoon only.
I think this is stupid, waste 23 million liters of water per day is only going to destroy our Earth. Although some people try to protect it,what can we do if this companies try to destroy it?
